Record-Breaking Cherry Auction Raises Funds for Brain Tumour Research SA
The 2024 Cherry Auction at SA Produce Market delivered a sweet victory for brain tumour research, with the winning bid raising a record-breaking $100,000 for Brain Tumour Research SA! This year’s Cherry Queen title went to Donna Mercurio of Bache Bros , whose premium record-breaking $85,000 bid will fuel groundbreaking brain tumour research. The cherry on top was a top up bid of $15,000 from Scalzi Produce taking the total to an incredible $100,000! This was truly a community effort with several sponsors including the South Australian Produce Market, the South Australian Chamber of Fruit and Veg, Ceravolo Orchards and other silent parties contributing to the final donation.
Each dollar raised at this year’s auction directly supports Brain Tumour Research SA’s mission to improve outcomes for brain tumour patients and families across South Australia. Funds will advance critical projects, including the development of a personalised therapy approach for recurrent brain tumours. Additionally, these contributions will enable the purchase of a PCR machine, an essential piece of equipment that allows researchers to study how specific gene mutations affect tumour growth. With this advanced technology, researchers can delve deeper into understanding and targeting the genetic factors that drive tumour formation, opening pathways to more effective treatment options.

Prof Stuart Pitson, Chair of Brain Tumour Research SA, expressed gratitude to SA Produce Market and the market community for their support. "This partnership with SA Produce Market and the generosity of the winning bidder, crowned this year’s Cherry Queen, will make a meaningful difference. Together, we’re advancing research that brings hope and better options to patients and families affected by brain tumours," said Prof Pitson.
The event also celebrated the start of South Australia’s cherry season, with local cherries now available at independent fruit and veg stores across the region. Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, Clare Scriven, encouraged South Australians to support local growers, emphasising the importance of buying SA-grown cherries this season. The Pick a Local, Pick SA! campaign, represented by Campaign Manager Penny Reidy, echoed this message, encouraging consumers to look for local cherries at stores proudly displaying the Pick a Local, Pick SA! sign.
As cherries fill local shelves this festive season, each purchase is not just a celebration of South Australia’s cherished produce but also a testament to the power of community and compassion in advancing life-changing medical research. Brain Tumour Research SA extends heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in making the 2024 Cherry Auction a success and to all who continue to support brain tumour research in South Australia.
