The Women’s and Children’s Hospital hosted the Neuro Statewide Training Meeting, bringing together neurosurgeons, radiologists, nurses and neuro healthcare staff from across South Australia to share the latest advances in paediatric neurosurgical care.

The meeting provided an important opportunity to share the latest research, surgical techniques and multidisciplinary approaches aimed at improving outcomes for children with neurosurgical conditions.

A strong program of presentations showcased current advances and ongoing developments in the field.

Dr Stephen Santoreneos, Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital and Royal Adelaide Hospital commenced the presentations with A Retrospective of Skull Base Surgery at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, reflecting on the evolution of surgical care within the state.

Dr Gareth Rutter, SET Neurosurgery Trainee SA, followed with Advances in the Medical Management of Craniopharyngioma, outlining emerging treatment strategies and clinical considerations.

After a networking brunch and sponsor exhibition, A/Prof Peter Gorayski, Radiation Oncologist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Australian Bragg Centre for Proton Therapy and Research, presented Proton Therapy in Paediatric Skull Base Tumours: Promise, Evidence, and the Craniopharyngioma Question, highlighting the evolving role of advanced radiation therapy.

Professor Juan Carlos Fernandez-Miranda, Surgical Director of the Stanford Brain Tumour, Skull Base and Pituitary Centres, concluded the meeting with his presentation Endoscopic Endonasal Surgery for Paediatric Craniopharyngiomas: Challenging the Dogma of Hypothalamic Injury, exploring evolving surgical approaches to complex skull base tumours.

The Neuro Statewide Training Meeting continues to strengthen collaboration and shared learning across disciplines, supporting ongoing improvements in paediatric neurosurgical care in South Australia.
