Anthony Walsh TBI Scholarship AWTBIS 2026

Purpose

The purpose of the AWTBIS to advance the research skills of a junior neuroscientist.

The scholarship can be used for the following research purposes in the area of Traumatic Brain Injury:

  • Conference Travel grant - to attend/present at a TBI/neuroscience scientific conference in Australia or New Zealand
  • Training Travel grant – to attend a workshop or laboratory visit to undertake specialist research training in Australia or New Zealand.
  • Vacation scholarship - to support an undergraduate student to undertake a 6-8 week research project.
  • Honours/PhD research project support – to support the direct research costs of a TBI research project.

Recipients will be required to provide a written report to the NRF within 3 months of the conclusion of their travel or project on the impact the scholarship had and how it supported their training or research. Recipients will also be asked to share relevant images or video relating to the activities the AWTBIS supported, as appropriate, to be shared on the NRF social media channels.

Time Lines

Applications for AWTBIS will open 1st March and must be submitted by the closing date of 30th April to the NRF.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible the applicant must be a Higher Degree Research student or Early-career researchers (ECRs - less than 5 years since PhD) at a University or research institute in South Australia undertaking Traumatic Brain Injury research.

Application Process

Applications for AWTBIS must be submitted to the NRF, e: info@nrf.com.au

Applicants will be required to provide a written statement (maximum 1,000 words) including the following sections:

  • CV
  • Summary of academic achievements
  • Specific details of the planned activity (i.e. conference, lab visit, research project costs or summer scholarship), including dates.
  • Budget – provide an outline of all costs for the planned activity, detail how the scholarship will be spent and include information on how any costs in excess of the scholarship will be covered (if relevant).
  • Description on how the scholarship will enhance the applicant’s research skills and knowledge through the planned activity.
  • Current employment/study arrangements, as appropriate.

In addition to providing a personal written statement‚ the applicant must provide the names of two referees.

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of meeting the eligibility criteria, the written statement and references. The selection panel and the Board of the NRF may award one or more scholarships, depending on the finances available.
