Glioblastoma Awareness Week
Let's Make A Difference

Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most aggressive and deadly brain tumours. It is the most common primary brain tumour in adults. With few treatment options and low survival rates, it urgently needs more research and more support.
This Glioblastoma Awareness Week, help us raise awareness as we shine a spotlight on the research, progress and hope that your support makes possible.
Why GBM Research Matters
- Glioblastoma is incurable.
- It has a median survival of just 12-15 months.
- There have been no advances in treatment or survival in the last 20 years.
- It can affect anyone, at any age – often with no warning.
- Progress is only possible through ongoing research and clinical trials.
Research You’ve Helped Fund
Thanks to your support, the NRF has funded multiple projects focused on:
- Understanding how glioblastoma resists treatment.
- Exploring new drug delivery methods across the blood-brain barrier.
- Investigating and improving immune-based approaches to target tumour cells.
- SA's first ever brain cancer support nurse, supporting SA patients to navigate their terminal diagnosis.
"We have the most collaborative and best coordinated brain cancer research in the country. So now we're using the network and the resources that we've developed, to progress towards clinical trials and better outcomes for patients." - Professor Stuart Pitson, NRF Chair of Brain Tumour Research.
Real Stories of Hope and Loss
Behind every statistic is a person.
Hear Chloe's story. In 2022 she suffered the heartbreak of losing her husband Dave, father to their two young boys just 4 and 11 months old, to an aggressive recurrent GBM.
He was only 41, young, fit and healthy.
In just 7 months he was gone.
"Dave was the most positive, upbeat and happy person and had a smile that no-one could forget. He was an incredible husband and definitely a doting father to our two boys. You never think it will happen to you, even with his symptoms, you never think it could be something like that."
With their lives turned upside down, Chloe and Dave along with their friends and family created Brave for Dave, a fundraising platform focused on raising funds, awareness and support to honour Dave and support all the patients and families who are facing their own devastating glioblastoma diagnosis.
It is thanks to the support and continued advocacy of Chloe and the incredible Brave for Dave and NRF communities that SA Health, in partnership with the NRF, agreed to fund the first ever SA brain cancer support nurse in 2024.
