The NRF is extremely proud to pledge $150,000 over 3 years to support the establishment of South Australia’s first Paediatric Brain Cancer Biobank.

Paediatric cancers are rare and researchers are currently extremely limited in their ability to conduct high quality research due to the lack of access to high quality human samples. A comprehensive paediatric brain cancer biobank will provide an invaluable resource to support world-class cutting edge research here in SA.

Leading this incredible initiative is internationally renowned brain cancer specialist Professor Jordan Hansford and NRF Director of Brain Tumour Research Professor Stuart Pitson.

"The establishment of paediatric brain cancer biobanking in SA allows our teams to not only participate in critical national and international collaborative projects, but to provide local resources for SA based researchers to push for new treatments and cures for children with brain tumours. This is our first critical step in many to expand our research for paediatric neuro-oncology into the future!”, said Professor Jordan Hansford.

With construction underway for the Australian Bragg Centre for Proton Therapy and Research right here in Adelaide, the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The SA Paediatric Brain Cancer Biobank will be able to support critical research into this advanced mode of therapy, with hundreds of additional paediatric patients expected to be referred to Adelaide for treatment from around the country.

NeuroSurgical Research Foundation EO Ginta Orchard said the NRF is proud to be supporting such a ground-breaking project which will change the landscape of paediatric brain cancer research in SA, positioning Adelaide as a world leader in neuro-oncology research.

“We are thrilled to be involved with what will ultimately be a landmark national resource based right here in Adelaide, supporting our researchers to find cures for children with brain tumours. We are extremely grateful to our generous donors who have made this possible.”
