Parkinson's Deep Brain Stimulation Equipment

Flinders Medical Centre has offered a service in Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) since 2007, unfortunately, the essential and specialised equipment required for this procedure (a stereotactic headframe and localiser which allows precise placement of the implanted brain electrodes) was inadvertently damaged in November 2020 during use for an operative case. This specific piece of equipment was unable to be repaired and is no longer in production. A quote has been obtained for an alternative replacement frame, and the stereotactic system upgrades which are necessary for its use. The funding for this equipment is currently not available, with no guarantee of becoming available soon, during the Covid pandemic. For this reason, we have not been able to provide this service.

This has had a significant impact on the current patients awaiting surgery, both clinically and psychologically, with ongoing progression of their conditions, impact on quality of life, and the anxiety arising from an unclear timeframe for treatment. The uncertainty surrounding this has also had an impact on the clinical capacity to continue to progress patients towards this therapeutic option, as it is not currently an option that can be realistically offered to them. This is an opportunity lost in terms of patients’ quality of life, minimisation of care needs and potential capacity for work and productivity.

he StealthStation S8 surgical navigation system enables you to precisely track the location of surgical instruments throughout a procedure. The StealthStation S8 system introduces the most advanced version of Stealth technology — a combination of hardware, software, tracking algorithms, image data merging, and specialized instruments to help guide you during surgical procedures.

The StealthStation surgical navigation system offers both optical and EM tracking capabilities, integration with external devices like microscopes and ultrasound, a broad array of instrument offerings, and core software applications for neurosurgery and spine procedures including Leksell Stereotactic System Dedicated system for minimally invasive stereotactic neurosurgery. Leksell Stereotactic System is the preferred system for very precise intracranial neurosurgery. Exceptional imaging, high platform rigidity and ease of use ensure that critical accuracy requirements are met for this surgical discipline.

The years of hard work and dedication that have made this service a possibility is testament to the dedicated team of clinicians, allied health, and administrative staff involved, and the prospect of long delays or cessation of the service represent an avoidable tragedy.

Please consider our request for urgent funding in order to recommence treatment for these patients, whose lives and livelihoods depend on it.
