I experienced my first operation in 1938, at the age of four-and-a-half.
In 1944, Sir Leonard Lindon removed another tumour from the neck, and diagnosed me with Neurofibromatosis (Von Recklinghausen’s Disease).
Since then I have had more than 20 operations for tumours of varying size and complexity, including some in the spine and brain.
As I turn 70, I realise how privileged I have been to have had the care, skill and attention of these dedicated doctors and neurosurgeons and how much the work of the NRF must have helped and encouraged them.
As a result of their knowledge, skills and techniques, which are constantly evolving, many people are recovering from what years ago would have been crippling or even fatal conditions. I thank God for them daily.
