Paediatric Appeal Launch for Life Saving Research
The “Paediatric Appeal” was launched in South Australia by the NeuroSurgical Research Foundation (NRF) on May 12th 2010 with a Gala dinner to be held at the National Wine Centre.
Every day, conditions such as Brain Tumours, Epilepsy, Aneurysms, Brain Haemorrhage, and Stroke impact on the lives of children around the world and NRF patron Carolyn Hewson comments that “research into children's conditions is different from that of adult conditions; it is an area of research that has seems to have been forgotten until now.” The target for the NRF is set at $1million. President of the NRF, Dr Brian North AO says that the Paediatric Campaign will “raise funds for critical research into life threatening brain conditions in children.”
Partnering with the University of Adelaide, Royal Adelaide Hospital and Women’s & Children’s Hospital, the NRF understands that it is now a vital time to research children’s neurological injuries and diseases. Because a child’s brain is not fully developed, medical research in this field requires special techniques. For this reason the NRF called upon major partners Haighs, Sarah Construction and Perpetual Trustees Australia to support the Gala dinner launch of the Paediatric Appeal. Ms Hewson is pleased with the progress of the launch and says that “there is a new level of sponsorship and support this year from across the community.”
While she says “the cause has touched many individuals and organisations,” the NRF welcomes further support and sponsorship to reach its significant research aims. This appeal continues the relationship between the NRF and the University of Adelaide, as the NRF has committed to raising $100,000 a year to fund two neurosurgical trainees to research at the RAH and hopes that this will encourage and support the future of neurosurgeons in Adelaide.
