Our research base is in neurotrauma, both brain and spinal cord injury. We have formed the Adelaide Head Injury Groups, along with co-workers in the fields of neuropathology, neuroanatomy, neuropsychology and road accident investigation. As a group we have an excellent track record of research in these fields. In particular, our work has concentrated on the early changes after head injury, defining the damage that occurs in the nerve cells. We have shown that this damage progresses during the first few hours after an injury and this may represent a window of opportunity from treatment by neuroprotective drugs.
In the spinal cord, we are studying the effects of inflammation on acute spinal cored injury and also the development of cysts in the spinal cord, a phenomenon that can be seen many years after an injury.
In a clinical study we are measuring eh neuropsychological effects of mild and moderate head injuries.
In another project we are examining blood levels of brain protein (S-100) in people who have suffered a minor head injury to see if this will be useful as a marker of brain injury. Some of these patients are also having MRI brain scans that will be correlated with the blood test results.
Our intention is to pursue these areas of research and I do not see any major change of emphasis in the near future. We have a track record in neurotrauma and this is also where our interest, experience and expertise lie. Our research has been presented and published widely and has been recognised with multiple awards and prizes.
Our commitment to trauma extends beyond research and involves teaching and various other areas of community service. I sit on the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia Trauma Committee and am a past Deputy Chairman of the SA State Trauma Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). I am also an instructor and course director for the Early Management of Severe Trauma courses run by the RACS, a Wing Commander in the RAAF Specialist Reserve teaching trauma management to the ADF and Patron of the Brain Injury Network of South Australia.
